Lady Feist is soon to step aboard a she of the seas, a large science research vessel bound for icy Greenland. She is not going alone; Feist has been invited by the Cape Farewell crew to join artists and scientists alike. Some of the musicians bunking together include KT Tunstall, Laurie Anderson, Jarvis Cocker, Martha Wainwright and many others (including architects, artists, composers, lions, tigers and bears).
An excerpt from the site best explains the mission:
"...the creative and science team will travel from Kangerlussuaq up to Disko Bay. The boat will then voyage north towards the Jakobshavn Glacier, one of Greenland's largest glaciers moving at a faster rate than ever before, losing 20 million tons of ice every day. The ambition of the expedition is to inspire the creative team to respond to climate change both in the Arctic and on their return."
A great way to follow this expedition is through the Cape Farewell website, by joining the podcast, or by adding "Cape Farewell" as a friend on Facebook. The website will be updated with images, blogs and news from the seafaring gang every day.
Before I go, here are some iceberg facts I gleaned from the Canadian Encyclopedia website:
Iceberg ["ice mountain"], a piece of ice that has become detached from its parent GLACIER. The glacier may be flowing into a FJORD, or may be an ice shelf (floating glacier of large dimensions extending beyond the coastline). Icebergs may melt or disintegrate, giving rise to smaller pieces called "growlers" and "bergy bits".
Please check back soon as I will have links to photos and news as the journey begins (September 25th), progresses, then ends (October 6th).
