For those of you checking the Cape Farewell site, you may have noticed that it goes down intermittently—it's as if its server is also floating through some nether-lands, or perhaps the pages are eminently popular. It should be the latter reason, in fact it must be so.
Hitting refresh, refresh usually makes the static go away, but here are some blog excerpts in case you are surfing their site on its downtime. I've also attached what is described as David Noble's in-flight photo booth. It's a bit of a Where's Waldo? if you're looking for she-who-shall-not-be-named, but the greatest wizards oft hide behind some kind of drape or fabric. Also, David Buckland discussing the trip to date is the embedded video below (posted by Matt Wainwright).
And, before I tell you who Leslie is bunking with, I'll give you a clue. It's one of the musicians also on-board. The full gang is listed here. Want to guess? I'll tell you on Monday afternoon. Maybe you can imagine the name of the imaginary song they might make up about icebergs.
Excerpts from the blogs:
From architect Sunand Prasad:
"White balance is a good metaphor for some of what Cape Farewell is about. How the polar ice caps help keep the delicate balance that has given the earth its remarkably stable, and self stabilising, climate for a few thousand years. We are seeing that balance being upset in an unimaginably forceful way. Simon, one of the scientists in our crew, was telling me how he had recently come across some climate predictions modelled in 2001 and realised that the ice cover reductions predicted to happen by 2050 had already happened in 2007 and 2008."
From Coastal and Marine geoscientist Carol Cotterill:
"Well after an eventful trip out here including radar problems at London delaying our flight by 4 hours leaving us with 2 minutes to spare before Heathrow stopped all outgoing flights for the night (bit of a close shave that one), and luggage chaos as 43 people and 1500kgs of kit descended on 3 airports in 24 hours, we’ve made it!"
Please, stop with the global warming alarmism. I have no doubt that human beings have a profound effect on their environment, but it's so hard to take seriously, and truly get a grasp on the reality of the situation when "global warming" is mostly being used for these kind of weird events, and when the media that surrounds it doesn't match up with facts I've read elsewhere. Are you trying to raise awareness? Why is that the goal? Global warming is being constantly shoved in everyone's face. How about some legitimate facts? How about a realistic discussion involving real solutions? Why have I been reading facts elsewhere that many icecaps that were predicted to be receding have been growing? Why have I read that the ice levels have always been receding and growing in different places on our planet, with no clear explanation? Seriously, I want to know, please, if you have the answer. Why was An Inconvenient Truth filled with false predictions and exaggeration? I'm begging you to use logic instead of bias. Watch David Deutsch's TED talk to see what a genius Cambridge physicist has to say about reducing emissions. Let's have less fear and anger, and more facts! 100, 200, 300 years of human activity cannot possibly be catastrophic for a planet that has been around for nearly 5 BILLION years, and contained life for nearly 4 billion. The unprecedented intellect of the human mind is having and will have a profound impact on our world and universe, but getting upset and cursing humans and having singer-songwriters ban together for events like this is far from a solution. At LEAST go for something significant or specific, like helping along the exponential breakthroughs in solar energy.
These people are probably a lot like you Chris. But the difference is they aren't sitting around bitching about it. Now I understand you don't agree with the way they are approaching the situation, but at least they are approaching it. What are you doing? What is your solution?
Chris, just the fact that you're talking about this on Feist's page means that her going on this "weird event", this expedition, has some kind of effect. no? If nothing changes, why are you raising controversy on some singer-songwriter's site?
And I have a feeling this is going to be a long discussion. A discussion which wouldn't even happen if singer-songwriters hadn't "banned together for events like this."
How much fossil fuel will be consumed by this expedition? Which includes everyone flying from where they were, to where they had to be? That Boat they are on must be consuming massive amounts of diesel,no?
Does no one ever see the irony in these types of media stunts?
In case you are wondering, the earth is returning to it's natural state, which is a more tropical climate. Whatever event you believe brought on the iceage is anyones guess, but the hard truth is prior to that in the age of the dinosaurs, for millions of years, the earth was tropical.
You seem pretty sure of yourself Joseph. I wouldn't be. Despite on which side of this conflict you stand (and not to say that there are only two sides), there are things we can all do to better the condition of our planet. I'm really sick and tired of people focusing on this as if it were a singular condition, a singular problem. This is a long asphalt highway, and their are answers lying in the pastures all along. It doesn't take science to tell you that we as humans are extremely degrading to our environments. I'm not saying that we are or aren't the main direct contributors of global warming. But isn't that why we partake on these investigative explorations? I'd hardly call this a media stunt, considering the relatively low profile individuals they have invited. And even if the sole purpose inviting those individuals is to attract media. Explain to me what is wrong with that. Lack of awareness is one of our biggest problems concerning global issues. Education is a beautiful thing. There are no "hard facts" when it comes to the future of this planet. But here is one hard fact; you are ignorant if you don't think we are contributing (by any means) to the depletion and integrity of this beautiful planet. I'm sorry... if that wasn't what you wanted to hear.
Hi Everett,I may sound sure of myself, but I really live by the motto.."The path to enlightenment, begins by admitting you know nothing.."
I think I get what your saying though. If it makes people change some habits and start living greener, then of course, by all means do it. I think when someone doesn't agree with the global warming thing, they come off as a person who doesn't care about the planet, and that is just not true in my case.
I don't want to argue on Leslie's site, so...well...I won't! I really didn't even want to post, but I couldn't help it. I am fascinated with the fact that the earth for millinos, perhaps billions of year was very warm. And then almost in an instant it was frozen. Scientists have found fossils of dinosaurs frozen upright! Is Mother earth returning to her natural state? Yes, Education is a beautiful thing..
Don't be scared of the truth, beacause only then, will the truth not scare you.
Appauld Feist for bring more attention to global warming, more and more attention, top-of-mind is the only way we will keep it constant and make change. Way to go girl!
