Feist is inviting you to bring more than your Fall coat to her
upcoming Canadian tour; unlike many party hosts, she is asking you to
bring food. The Feist concert food drive (in tandem with the Canadian
Association of Food Banks) will take place at each tour stop along her
upcoming 13-city tour. Feist encourages attendees to bring food
donations and/or monetary contributions to help benefit their local
Community Food Bank. Each month more than 720,000 Canadians access
food banks, of which 39 per cent are children. Those who contribute
will be rewarded with a chance to win a special prize from Feist.
Feist has also announced that all proceeds from her merchandise sales
throughout the tour, will be donated to the following
Canadian-based initiatives: CARE Canada, MSF (Doctors Without Borders)
and War Child Canada. We will be posting more information on all of
these initiatives in the weeks that follow, but please spread the
word.
Feist managed to find a pocket of cell reception and she's called to report on her seaworthy voyage. The waves are high, higher than the walls of the ship at night. She and Martha Wainwright are bunking together, each a sea levee to the other's flood wall. So far, no sickness for Leslie, but not everyone has been spared. Drink ginger tea in the drink.
For those of you checking the Cape Farewell site, you may have noticed that it goes down intermittently—it's as if its server is also floating through some nether-lands, or perhaps the pages are eminently popular. It should be the latter reason, in fact it must be so.
Hitting refresh, refresh usually makes the static go away, but here are some blog excerpts in case you are surfing their site on its downtime. I've also attached what is described as David Noble's in-flight photo booth. It's a bit of a Where's Waldo? if you're looking for she-who-shall-not-be-named, but the greatest wizards oft hide behind some kind of drape or fabric. Also, David Buckland discussing the trip to date is the embedded video below (posted by Matt Wainwright).
And, before I tell you who Leslie is bunking with, I'll give you a clue. It's one of the musicians also on-board. The full gang is listed here. Want to guess? I'll tell you on Monday afternoon. Maybe you can imagine the name of the imaginary song they might make up about icebergs.
Lady Feist is soon to step aboard a she of the seas, a large science research vessel bound for icy Greenland. She is not going alone; Feist has been invited by the Cape Farewell crew to join artists and scientists alike. Some of the musicians bunking together include KT Tunstall, Laurie Anderson, Jarvis Cocker, Martha Wainwright and many others (including architects, artists, composers, lions, tigers and bears).
An excerpt from the site best explains the mission:
"...the creative and science team will travel from Kangerlussuaq up to Disko Bay. The boat will then voyage north towards the Jakobshavn Glacier, one of Greenland's largest glaciers moving at a faster rate than ever before, losing 20 million tons of ice every day. The ambition of the expedition is to inspire the creative team to respond to climate change both in the Arctic and on their return."
A great way to follow this expedition is through the Cape Farewell website, by joining the podcast, or by adding "Cape Farewell" as a friend on Facebook. The website will be updated with images, blogs and news from the seafaring gang every day.
Before I go, here are some iceberg facts I gleaned from the Canadian Encyclopedia website:
Iceberg ["ice mountain"], a piece of ice that has become detached from its parent GLACIER. The glacier may be flowing into a FJORD, or may be an ice shelf (floating glacier of large dimensions extending beyond the coastline). Icebergs may melt or disintegrate, giving rise to smaller pieces called "growlers" and "bergy bits".
Please check back soon as I will have links to photos and news as the journey begins (September 25th), progresses, then ends (October 6th).
There's a song on The Reminder, one that is a bit shy of the hooplah, one that lingers, lingers, long after it's played. It's a slow sipper, a mean tippler. Bring me the head of Brandy Alexander.
Feist and Ron Sexsmith wrote this round together in a bar, trading glasses and blurring song lines. Ron's new album Exit Strategy just came out and he released his version of the drink.
In an interview somewhere, Ron said:
"I didn't really plan on recording a version of my own until I heard her take on it which, by the way, I love. The Feist version is very pretty and sophisticated where as I heard it as more of a drunken sing-along."

The time is nigh to vote for Feist in the next round of video nominations for the MTV Awards. This time, Feist is up for I FEEL IT ALL in the Video of the Year category.

Did you happen to tune into the 39th season premiere of Sesame Street? I never thought of Sesame Street as a show with premieres--it seems always new and old--both at once.
Feist performed with the muppets on the show (yesterday), although the video had made the world-wide-rounds for a few weeks now. Here it is again (I posted it once before):
Thank you to you and you, (adieu, adieu, adieu), for entering the VIP contest for Feist's Good Morning America performance. It has come and gone. If you went to the show, you woke up early. If you watched the show, you woke up early. If you slept through both, and aren't sleeping now, here is the video from the first of three songs.
